چکیده

This paper discusses the use of a focused ion beam for the preparation of crosssectional transmission electron microscopy specimens from small samples, typically 150 micron in diameter, that have been recovered from a laser-heated diamond anvil cell. We present preliminary observations of iron melted with helium as the pressure-transmitting medium to pressures near 4 GPa. The project is designed to investigate entrapment mechanisms of the inert gases in metals and silicates at high pressure and temperatures.

The Plagioclase-maskelynite Transition in an External Heated Diamond Anvil Cell

Introduction: In heavily shocked stony meteorites, plagio-clase in the host rock has transformed into glass (maskelynite) in a solid-state reaction. So far, the formation pressure of maske-lynite has been estimated only based on dynamic high-pressure experiments [1]. However, duration of pressure in laboratory shock experiments is significantly smaller (10-6 sec) than that in meteorite parent b...

Experimental investigation of the stability of Fe-rich carbonates in the lower mantle

[1] The fate of carbonates in the Earth’s mantle plays a key role in the geodynamical carbon cycle. Although iron is a major component of the Earth’s lower mantle, the stability of Fe-bearing carbonates has rarely been studied. Here we present experimental results on the stability of Fe-rich carbonates at pressures ranging from 40 to 105 GPa and temperatures of 1450–3600 K, corresponding to dep...

Spin and valence dependence of iron partitioning in Earth's deep mantle.

We performed laser-heated diamond anvil cell experiments combined with state-of-the-art electron microanalysis (focused ion beam and aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy) to study the distribution and valence of iron in Earth's lower mantle as a function of depth and composition. Our data reconcile the apparently discrepant existing dataset, by clarifying the effects of spin (h...

Confocal Microscopy to Measure Volume in a Diamond Anvil Cell

Confocal microscopy is a potentially powerful technique for obtaining equation-of-state (EOS) data for fluids in a diamond anvil cell. Unlike conventional microscopy, a confocal microscope scans the cell in three dimensions. From the intensity profile of the reflected laser light, we calculated the index of refraction and optical thickness of the sample contained in the cell. These measurements...

X-ray emission spectroscopy with a laser-heated diamond anvil cell: a new experimental probe of the spin state of iron in the Earth's interior.

Synchrotron-based X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) is well suited to probing the local electronic structure of 3d transition metals such as Fe and Mn in their host phases. The laser-heated diamond anvil cell technique is uniquely capable of generating ultra-high static pressures and temperatures in excess of 100 GPa and 3000 K. Here X-ray emission spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction have been i...
